This four-day intensive course covers labour and birth physiology as it unfolds from pre-labour to the first hour after birth. It will enable you to learn new ways to make your pregnancy yoga, parentcraft or birth preparation classes more effective and/or assist you to deepen your knowledge, skills and intuition in the birthplace. You will be encouraged to develop a plan to integrate the course contents into your existing professional activities or to progress to become an Active Birth pregnancy yoga teacher.
This module is recommended for all applicants. It may be all that you require if you are already professionally trained and working as a midwife, doula, birth educator or other health professional and want to increase your confidence, knowledge and skills. Otherwise it is a wonderful introduction to training as a birth professional or Active Birth yoga teacher.
N.B. This course is not a comprehensive training for beginners in birth education. You will need to study further if you wish to offer Preparing Labour and Birth courses. While we plan to develop such a training in the future, we currently refer people on to either the NCT or Birth International who both run accreditedtrainings for birth educators. Our programme is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of Active Birth that may then be developed further with us into Module 2 Active Birth Yoga for Pregnancy. Following this, we offer an apprenticeship training as described on page 7 which, in turn, can lead to becoming an Associate of the Active Birth Centre.
Please wear loose comfortable clothing (trousers or leggings), with socks.
Lunch is not provided but there are several inexpensive basic local eateries nearby. Tea, coffee and refreshments will be provided in the breaks.
Successful applicants are asked to do some research prior to the course and bring photocopies of two studies into the efficacy of mobility and upright postures during labour and birth, or an allied subject. Suggestions as to possible sources for this research appear on the Recommended Reading List, which will be provided.
You must have a model pelvis and doll with you on this course, which is an essential teaching aid for active birth education and will be used to learn and practise demonstration skills.
This intensive course costs £595 inclusive. See page 10 of prospectus for details of how to apply. A deposit of £195 should accompany your application. Upon acceptance, payment of the balance may accompany your letter confirming you will take up the offer of a place, or otherwise must be paid in full six weeks before commencement of the course at the latest.
