This four hour workshop will give you a complete understanding of the physiology of natural childbirth from the very beginning of labour until the birth of the placenta. You will learn about the importance of the birth hormones and how to optimise the birthing environment for a natural birth. You will also learn about the babies innate behaviour during the process of birth and discover how you can help your baby to be born with gravity effective positions and movements and the use of a birthing pool.

The mother's role is to be able to relax, stay calm through the intensity and ride the waves of contractions as they come and go, one by one. You will learn to use natural tools of breathing awareness and the use of sound, positive thought and visualisations, and some simple self hypnosis in active birth positions.

There will be an inspiring slide show demonstrating the best way to use the power of water to help your labour. Using a birth pool offers great benefits for pain relief, increased privacy and deep relaxation. Proven as an effective alternative to medical pain relief for many women, using a pool in the right way can shorten labour and increase your chances of a natural birth. Janet Balaskas is the author of 'The Water Birth Book' and will give you all the up-to-date information and guidance you need.

The partner's role throughout will be discussed and practically demonstrated.

The workshop will end with examples of joyful natural birthing - both on land and in water - with beautiful and moving slides of mothers and fathers greeting their newborn baby for the first time during the first moments after birth. You will leave feeling optimistic and more confident about your ability to give birth normally and also open minded and relaxed, should you need to change the agenda at the time.
